Weather

Warmer than on previous days with sun most of the day. Highest tempearture about 4C.

Conditions

OK on major runs, deteriorating elsewhere. Bowls in great condition.

Story of the Day

It was still quite chilly when we started the day with a trip up Eagle lift to knock off some runs in the King Con area, as part of our objective of skiing every marked run on the mountain. Temptation lived up to the Groomers Choice billing.

First run on Temptation Groomers Choice of the day.

Sitka was groomed. The short Combustion run down to the bottom of King Con lift was icy even at the start of the day. With virtually no queues early in the day, we were able to 'knock off' 6 runs from King Con in little more than an hour.

High Card was ungroomed with Moguls.

Before stopping for coffee we ventured into McKonkey's Bowl for 1 run. At the top of the lift there are a number of options. To the right is Sunrise, graded blue, but pretty unpleasant at the top with large moguls and some icy passages. To the right is Tycoon, a cruise along the ridge and the bowl itself, which justifies its double-black rating. Between the bowl and Sunrise is a lightly gladed area.

This time, we turned left and almost immediately dropped into the gladed area. The snow conditions were superb, with about 12" of soft powder and very few obstacles. A dozen turns later, we came out on to Sunrise and then dropped into the easier section of the bowl. This was a delightful run.

After coffee, after the great run in McKonkeys we ventured into Jupiter Bowl for the first time in the week. For our first run (of 2), we skiied down the ridge, almost under the line of the lift.

This was 'interesting', with moguls near the top and softer powder lower down. There were very few people around, so we had to make our own line, rather than following every one else.

For the second run, we again started off down the ridge, but then turned right and dropped into the bowl.

With Motherlode lift closed on weekdays, the only way out from the bottom of Single Jack other than Thaynes was King Con at the bottom of Thaynes Canyon. In two days, the condition of the canyon run had deteriorated badly, with icy patches at places.

King Con gained us enough height to be able to get back to the Resort Center via the zig-zag of Gotcha Cut-off, which was in pretty bad position with rocks showing at the turns.

At the bottom, we started to search for Sue, who was taking a lesson. On our first trip up First Time we saw her with her lesson group in 'Bunny Hollow' .. a name that now seems to have been dropped.

Sue in her lesson

By the time we got to the bottom, Sue had been round again. On our next trip up First Time, we once again saw her in 'Bunny Hollow'.

To complete our coverage of the whole mountain, we needed to do the two runs on the race hill that are open to the public. Both of them are accessible from the top of Eagle lift, via the rapidly deteriorating Gotcha Cut-Off.

Particularly near the top of Ladies SL, snow coverage was poor. The lower down we got, the better the conditions seemed to be. We still needed to ski Mens SL and it looked as if Gotcha Cut-Off would be closed at any time because of deteriorating conditions.
So, we headed up Eagle and King Con again, to ski down the ridge and then Gotcha Cut-Off to the top of Mens SL, which was in marginally better condition than the ladies version

Towards the end of the afternoon, we met up with Sue and did a couple of runs with her from First Time

After another good day, with a mixture of easy and difficult runs and a respectable amount of vertical, we went back to the condo, to record our runs and check eMail etc. on our IT infrastructure.

Notice three computers on the table and the wireless LAN access point by the sink.
